Study Shows 97% of Baristas Laugh at the Term “Cupping” the First Time they Hear it

DAVIS, CA— A new study released by UC Davis’s Coffee Campus this morning shows a shocking trend: an average of 97% of baristas laugh at the term “cupping” the first time they hear it.

According to the report, the term “cupping,” which coffee professionals use to refer to a simple and standardized immersion brew used for assessing quality, is frequently first interpreted as the cupping of balls.

Breaking down the data, the groups most consistently amused were baristas under 25 at 98%, LGBTQIA+ employees at 99.9%, and male baristas who still say “your mom” as a joke at a whopping 100%. The groups least visibly amused included religious Christians at only 94%, baristas who were still in the process of learning English at 87%, and baristas who started out as home enthusiasts at 80%.

According to the numbers, amusement persisted for an average of one month before gradually shifting to apathy.

“What these results suggest is a strong trend that not only do many baristas not know what cupping is before they join the coffee industry, they also have their minds in the gutter,” said a UC Davis representative. “What work the coffee industry will need to undertake to correct this trend still remains to be seen.”
