GREENSBORO, NC— The frustrations of one Greensboro cafe’s staff reached a boiling point today over the manager’s frequent and continual use of the popular Bitmoji app via texts, emails, on social media, and on the cafe’s Slack.
The team members, many of whom have been with the cafe since it launched in 2010, called an impromptu meeting, refusing to open the shop until manager Miguel Rodriguez heard them out. Customers waited outside, cupping their hands to the window and peering in, but the staff was not deterred.
The tight-knit and caring team presented Rodriguez with a petition signed by all of them demanding that he delete the popular application, which allows you to make a cartoon version of yourself and place it in all sorts of outfits and scenarios, from his phone. According to our sources, the meeting was heated and deeply emotional.
“I just think it’s funny,” exclaimed Rodriguez, according to reports from inside the meeting. “What’s wrong with me loving Bitmoji?”
“It was cute at first but it’s become completely overwhelming,” said Sarah Miller, a veteran barista who’s worked alongside Rodriguez since the shop opened. “Now, when I get a message notification, all I feel is anxiety. It’s gotten to the point where I not only avoid work emails and our slack, but all my other texts and social media too.” According to reports, Miller seemed on the verge of tears.
As more team members shared their stories and a line built up outside the cafe, Rodriguez went from laughing at the team’s concerns to scoffing at them, and finally, as he realized how his actions were hurting his staff, to acceptance.
According to reports, he really came to understand how his life needed to change, apologizing for all the times in the past he’d brushed off staff concerns and thanking staff for sticking with him. Witnesses say he sighed heavily as he deleted the app from his phone once and for all.
As of press time, Rodriguez is reporting a strong desire to redownload the app, but is holding strong and does not intend to crack.
