After four grueling days of tasting, winners were announced at this year’s Cup of Excellence competition yesterday afternoon, with seven of the top ten spots held by the much-celebrated Geisha variety.
“We all cheered and gave each other high fives when we heard a Geisha had won. That it also went on to take seven of the top ten spots was just icing on the cake,” said one judge. “What better way to showcase the importance of terroir?”
Another remarked, “I immediately called my lead barista and we are planning to use this winning Geisha lot in his Brewer’s Cup routine. We really got lucky; I wanted to use a Cup of Excellence winner, but I don’t think any other coffee variety tastes particularly good.”
“Pacamara is also okay, I guess,” another judge commented, referring to two of the other top ten winning lots. “I mean, I don’t even really like coffee from this country. Thank God for Geisha!”
When asked about the record price paid for this lot, the high bidder was excited to make the investment. “I know it’s a lot of money, but I really couldn’t pass this one up. Geishas really are remarkable. They’re so floral and complex, almost like coffees from Ethiopia—maybe even a little better!”
