Cafe Magically Filled Only with Service Dogs, Definitely Not Just Pets

This piece is dedicated to Nathanael May, one of our first Patreon supporters, to whom we are forever grateful.

WASHINGTON, D.C.— A joyous day was had by all at one D.C. cafe last Saturday when several local patrons brought their dogs—all of whom were service dogs, not just pets—along for their weekend latte.

All throughout the long summer day, the cafe was frequented by dogs of all shapes, sizes, and colors. The one thing they had in common was that each and every last one was definitely a service dog, not just someone’s pet hanging out despite food safety laws.

We asked barista Ai Chen how this was possible.

“Well, if they weren’t service dogs, they wouldn’t be allowed to hang out in here,” she said with a wink. “Fortunately, every last one of them is in fact a service dog.”

“Yeah, Harry is totally a service dog,” said patron Alvin Washington, giving his curly-furred Labradoodle a nice rub. “He’s a very good service boy, isn’t that right Harry?” Harry panted happily in response.

Regular customer Leslie Farro invited us to “go ahead” and pet her peppy service Chihuahua Mitsy, whom she then put up onto her table while she rummaged through her purse.

After investigating, we have no choice but to conclude that, no matter how unlikely, we were witness to a magical confluence of service canines and coffee. But then again, cafes are magical places.
